World Water Day

Posted in Industry News

On World Water Day we take a look at how CO2Sustain® can help soft drinks manufacturers to reduce water usage.

Water Scarcity

It is alarming to think that by 2025 1 in 7 people in the world will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity. This highlights the need for urgent action. Now more than ever it is time to think about the future, and by ensuring that we adopt a sustainable approach we can help preserve the world’s resources for future generations.

It will come as no surprise that soft drinks manufacturers and beverage companies use a lot of water to get their products to market! Looking at how they can reduce water usage is now a must.

A core ingredient

Water is not only used as the core ingredient in all soft drinks, is also an integral part of the production process. With water scarcity at the forefront of sustainability issues surrounding the beverage industry, manufacturers have a responsibility to contribute to the effective management of water as a finite resource. Organisations such as the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) has been established to advance the sectors’ sustainability efforts. How is the beverage industry reacting to water scarcity?

According to the New England Water Innovation Network (NEWIN), it takes up to 170 litres of water to make up just half a litre of soda. Most of this water wastage comes from cleaning products and manufacturing equipment. It is this cleaning process that has come under the microscope with wastewater management. This entails reusing water multiple times in the cleaning process.

It is estimated that the major beverage manufacturers have invested around $84million in the last three years to water efficiency and sustainability.

A simple idea

It is often the simplest things that can have a significant impact.

By adding CO2Sustain® to your drinks not only do your consumer’s benefit from a drink that is fizzier for longer, so enjoying a better drink experience. There is an additional benefit of reduced foaming during the bottling process.

The result? The same volume can be produced in less batches, with less batches there is less cleaning and less chemicals are used which means less water is used and less waste water treatment is needed. This seems to us to be a win win scenario!
